Frequently Asked Question

What is email spoofing and how do I protect myself?
Last Updated 3 days ago

Email spoofing is when someone sends an email that appears to come from a trusted person (like your boss or a coworker) but is actually from an attacker.

"Hi, the Q3 report is attached for your review."

Always check the actual email address, not just the display name

🔍 How to Spot It

  • The display name looks right but the email address is wrong — click on the sender's name to reveal the actual address
  • The email asks you to do something unusual — buy gift cards, wire money, or share sensitive info
  • There's a sense of urgency — "I'm in a meeting, please handle this right away"

🛡️ What to Do

  1. Verify by another channel — call or text the person directly to confirm
  2. Don't reply to the email — start a new email to the person using their known address
  3. Report it to IT by submitting a ticket
⚠️ Important: WaveTech will never ask you for your password via email.
